James Miles, a doctor of naturopathic medicine, or N.D., has been practicing in Georgetown for three years. He grew up in Houston and started his career working in and then running health food stores. This business career was both successful and time consuming.
"It wasn't until later in life that I decided to get out of the business world and go back and complete my studies and get my doctorate," said Dr. Miles.
Ultimately, Dr. Miles' decision to pursue a career in alternative medicine and, in particular, naturopathic medicine was timed perfectly.
The negative effects of many manufactured drugs, the ever increasing cost of patented prescription drugs, as well as the apparent effectiveness of natural, non-invasive treatment, have caused a dramatic increase in the acceptance of alternative medicines, including naturopathic, he said.
Alternative medicine encompasses a wide range of therapies, including but not limited to, chiropractic, homeopathy, herbal medicine, acupuncture, massage therapy and naturopathy.
"Nationally, 66 percent of the American public is looking for an alternative choice to allopathic (conventional) medicine. There are over 19,000 alternative health care practitioners in the State of Texas and that number is growing," said Dr. Miles.
The naturopathic approach to treating a patient includes the use of recommended herbs and supplements, as well as a discussion with the patient concerning foods that will benefit his individual health situation.
"We do not say that we heal anyone," said Dr. Miles. "The practical application of naturopathy is that I teach you how to take care of yourself. We get your body balanced and it will heal itself," he said.
Many people take supplements in an effort to improve their health or, at least, to avoid illness. Based upon what they may have read or what friends have said has worked for them, they go to the grocery store or health food store and buy what they believe they need.
"The problem with people going to a health food store and picking up their own herbs and supplements is they have no way of knowing what they need," said Dr. Miles.
"There has to be a hair analysis, samples of hair put through chemical analysis by an independent testing firm, or blood analysis. The N.D. is qualified to interpret these tests and determine what the patient should have in the way of supplements. It is appropriate to seek the service of a Naturopath so the patient knows exactly what he should be taking and eliminate the guess work," he said.
Texas currently does not have provisions to license naturopathic doctors. Dr. Miles is vice-chairman of the Texas Complementary and Alternative Medicine Board and is working with the Texas Legislature to initiate registration requirements which should result in licensing requirements for naturopathic doctors.
"We will not be able to get the registration requirements through the legislature during the session that starts in January but it will go through during the following session," said Dr. Miles.
As the only practicing doctor of naturopathic medicine in Williamson County, Dr. Miles' practice is growing rapidly from patient referrals. This growth has necessitated a doubling in size of his office space. Dr. Miles and his staff will host an open house on November, 15 at the new facility, located in the Park Avenue Center at 1811 North Austin Avenue.
"The more people that I can enlighten about naturopathy, the alternative way of doing things, the happier I will be. It is very fulfilling to know when I leave here at night to go home and put my head on the pillow, I have helped someone that day," said Dr. Miles.
